Doug Ford was quoted by the Post as saying “Before the sports complex, [the monorail] would stop into a 1.6-million-square-foot mall with the likes of Nordstrom, and Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s… And on top of that, we’d stick the largest ferris wheel in the world over there.”

Can the rest of Toronto Council grow a backbone and stop these lunatics before they ruin our city? All three levels of government had agreed on a good, long-term plan for the waterfront development and it was proceeding on schedule. That schedule is just not fast enough for the Fords and it has too much government involvement. For brothers who are supposedly anti-government, the Fords seek to use the power of government to do whatever they like.

Note to HP: Doubling down on webOS would have meant buying RIM and migrating BlackBerry services to the webOS platform.

Like most people, I didn’t have a great desire to buy a TouchPad, but webOS held the promise of becoming a worthy competitor to Apple’s iOS. HP just didn’t give it a chance because of the new CEO’s desire to exit the PC business. WebOS has already suffered from one slow death, when it transitioned from Palm to HP, and I don’t believe it can survive another. Like BeOS, another once promising operating system that never had a chance to shine, it will be remembered for what might have been. I can’t but feel a little sad at its passing.

It’s time for this practice to end. The government should ban the use of fuel surcharges and require that the advertised price be the price that you pay. Companies should adjust prices if their costs change, regardless of whether it’s due to rising fuel prices or other components.

Instead of being able to focus on important details such as the colour of their ties or the widths of their lapels, we were forced to notice the missing paint and the bare nails. But it turns out we’ve seen this before — it was in the background during the 2008 debate but the roundtable format made the set less noticeable.

This set is courtesy of the Canadian Government Conference Centre in Ottawa, which is located in the old railway station building. While this building is gorgeous, the acoustics are terrible and it sounded like a high school assembly. The railway station was almost torn down in the 1960s but it was spared and used for Canada’s centenary celebrations in 1967. I can almost imagine this set being hammered together in 1967, back when brown and orange paint were at the pinnacle of popularity.

The ceremony was held at Royal Roads Military College (RRMC) in Victoria, BC. Some of us were heading to attend a military college after basic training while others were going to a civilian university. Most of us would join the regular force but some were intending to join the reserves.

My father swore me in since he was an air force Major at the time. Those without a serving parent were sworn in by the attesting officer, Rear Admiral G.L. Edwards.

I can’t recall anything about the day, but I knew half a dozen of the new recruits since Comox’s Highland Secondary School was over-represented thanks to its diligent librarian who was the best recruiter Canada has ever had.

I’m having fun googling everybody who was sworn in on the same date to see where they ended up. I made some margin notes, presumably later in 83 or maybe in 84, which have been helpful. Sadly, my notes show that two of the enrolees appear to have been killed in a car accident shortly after.

Perhaps I was snoozing during chemistry class when we learned that polyurethane can be made only in obnoxious colours, but we’ve come to expect the impossible from Apple. No detail is too small to escape Apple’s attention. The only rational explanation is that Steve and Jonathan had a bet that they could make even ugly colours cool.

Look at the range of the covers below. Polyurethane choices are on the left and leather are on the right. The 5 leather colours are fine, but the polyurethane colours are uniformly ugly. Couldn’t Apple have at least created a black cover that didn’t require leather? Couldn’t they have charged more for black like they sometimes do?
